“There is value in any experience that exercises those ethical restraints collectively called sportsmanship.”
The dawn of 15th of March 2018 witnessed the keen sportspeople of the student community priming themselves for one of the most exciting events of their lives on campus. At 8.30 am, the athletes assembled at the Boys’ Hostel Ground where the ceremony was to take place. The day commenced with the torch bearers carrying the esteemed torch from the GRD Memorial to the venue where the captain of the athletics team lit the torch. The air was filled with pride and excitement as they were glorifying their passion. The honorable Principal of PSG College of Technology, Dr.R.Rudramoorthy and the honorable principal of PSG Polytechnic College, Dr.B.Giriraj, hoisted the National Flag. The captains of the various sports teams were called upon for the momentous oath taking ceremony after which the sports meet was declared open by the honorable principal. The students dispersed to the gallery to witness the events that transpired henceforth.
After the inauguration, the track and field events for both men and women took place followed by the prize distribution ceremony wherein the staff members of the college awarded the students for their meritorious achievements in various sports activities.
As the students were actively gearing up for the second session of the event scheduled at 4.00 pm, the sudden heavy downpour resulted in the change of venue which led to the cancellation of the March Past. However, the rain failed to wash away the spirits of our sportspeople. The venue was changed to the Basketball court and the sports committee swiftly set-up the venue for the ensuing ceremony.
The ceremony embarked with the “Tamil Thai Vazhthu”. The Chief Guest for the evening was Mr.V.Lakshmi Narayanasamy, who is the Chairman of the reputed Suguna Industries and Institutions. The welcome address was delivered by the Sports Secretary Mr.M.Ashuvin. The report on the achievements of the sportswomen was briefed by Ms.P.Priyanka, Sports Joint Secretary followed by the Chief Guest’s address which enlightened the minds of the sportspeople. The prize distribution ceremony commenced by honoring the students for their achievements in the various inter-college events that took place throughout the academic year. The awards were given as Individual championships and an Overall championship. The venue glimpsed the cheers and applauds of the gathering and witnessed the awardees praising each other for their triumphs, thus portraying the spirit of true sportsmanship.
The evening ended with the Vote of Thanks by the Sports Secretary followed by the National Anthem. The students departed with contented hearts, smiles and tears, longing to relive the moments they created. The students took pride in being a part of the sports team and for most, sports offered solace and loving teammates akin to family. The proud sportspeople having collected trophies and laurels, also bagged unforgettable memories. Sportsmanship is where leadership and co-ordination is cultivated, which sculpts eminent individuals.
One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than a hundred teaching it.
