District employment office, Coimbatore’s Model Career Center and PSG College of Technology jointly organized a Career Guidance Seminar on Tuesday, January 31st, 2017 at the D-Block conference hall at PSG Tech. The aim of the seminar was to guide the pre-final year students to make smart career choices. Distinguished guests, each an expert in their respective profession had been invited to take part in the seminar. The third year students of all departments eagerly participated in the event.
Before the seminar started, THE BRIDGE got the chance to interact with Tmt. A. LATHA, Regional Joint Director (Employment), Coimbatore and Major. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Director, Ex-Serviceman Welfare Board, Coimbatore. Tmt. A. Latha shared her school and college experiences and how she became the major government official she is today. Being the Regional Employment Officer, she is in charge of the District Employment offices of 8 districts with Coimbatore as the headquarters.
The seminar began with a prayer song, followed by the welcome address by our Principal, Dr.R.Rudramoorthy. Our principal spoke about the various job opportunities in the service sector. He also spoke about the various programs organized by the college to train the students for placements as well as entrepreneurial guidance.
The Presidential address was then delivered by Tmt. A Latha. She spoke about the assistance provided by the government through programs like Study Circle that trains graduates who have registered in the District Employment offices to face competitive exams like UPSC and TNPSC at no cost. The major concern of Engineering graduates today is not unemployment but underemployment i.e. not getting the right job for the education. The District Employment office even conducts mock interviews and entrepreneurship assistance programs for unemployed graduates. ‘Private placement meet’ – a program introduced by her, acts as a bridge between private employers and candidates. She cited the path of Christian Von Koenigsegg , founder of Koenigsegg Automotive as an inspiration for the students. Her eloquent speech was informative and motivating.
Tmt .A. JOTHIMANI, Deputy Director, District Employment office, Coimbatore delivered a special address on the ‘Role of Employment Exchange’. She was the first graduate in her family as well as her village. She spoke about the various services offered by the Department of Employment, Tamilnadu. The employment websites of the government provide graduates easy access to the services and have considerably reduced waiting times in the employment offices. The government even provides opportunities for graduates to find jobs abroad through its undertaking, ‘The Overseas Manpower Corporation’.
A special address on ‘Opportunities in Banking Sector and Entrepreneurship Development’ was delivered by Thiru.Vanangamudi, President, MSME, Coimbatore. Thiru.Vanangamudi possesses expertise in a wide range of fields such as agriculture, banking, yoga, and entrepreneurship. His humorous speech set a light tone for the event. The students burst into laughter on listening to some of his funny experiences. He said that the banking sector is a perfect place for the engineering graduates. The difference between winners and others, he said, is the exposure to professional guidance.With proper guidance and hard work, anyone can be successful. His ability to connect with the audience was exceptional.
Major .SURESH KUMAR, Assistant Director, Ex-Servicemen Welfare Board, Coimbatore gave a special address on ‘Employment Opportunities in Armed Forces’. Having gallantly served the Indian Army for 24 years, Major.Suresh Kumar joined the Ex-Servicemen Welfare Board of the State government in 2009. He explained about the various ways in which an engineering graduate can enter the armed forces. Students eagerly took notes from his slides. He said that the armed forces is the perfect habitat for those seeking adventure. It is very rewarding as well with all the benefits both while on duty and after retirement. He then showed the students, the latest tech that is being used by the Army, the Navy and the Airforce.
Thiru.VINOTH, District Employment Officer, Erode delivered a special address on how to face ‘Competitive Exams’. An alumnus of Anna University, CEG, Chennai, Thiru.Vinoth cleared the TNPSC Group 1 exams and was appointed as the DEA of Erode district. However, his passion for becoming a police officer stimulated him to write the TNPSC Group 1 exams again. He had cleared the exams this time too and is soon going to be appointed as a District Superintendent of Police at just 24 years of age. He spoke about the importance of the youth in the society and that each person should allocate some time every day for the betterment of the nation.He also said that students should start preparing for such competitive exams right from college.
The final special address of the seminar was delivered by Ms.D.GAYATHRI, Young Professional, MCC-Coimbatore on ‘Role of NCS and Opportunities in Public Sector’. She said that each individual has a unique perspective that defines them. Her classification of the various job opportunities and post graduate education greatly benefited the students.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr P Visalakshi, Professor, ECE Department. She thanked the entire team behind the success of this career guidance seminar. This occasion had been made very successful by the team effort under the leadership of our Principal. She thanked the dedicated team members namely,

SUDARSHAN SRIDHAR (M.Sc. Computer Systems, 2015-20) is a jovial and fun loving person. He loves to balance sports and academics. He is an active sportsperson representing the PSG Tech Cricket team. He is intrested in photography, long drives and is an absolute foodie.
