Techians’ 2017- A Chronicle

The remarkable events of the past year,  that occurred within the campus and in the city of Coimbatore.

2017 has indeed been an exuberant year for PSG Techians. The numerous positive changes that occurred throughout the year both in and around the campus seemed to have positioned the staff and student community in an opportune and beneficial environment, to aid progress in various disciplines.

THE BRIDGE enlists certain significant events and turnovers that took place in Coimbatore city and the campus premises, that catalyzed the development of not just PSG Tech, but also the city in which it resides.

            1.The much-awaited inauguration of the Gandhipuram Flyover:

The first level of the much hyped Gandhipuram Flyover from Park Gate to Sathy Main Road was inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on November 1st, 2017. The project commenced in September 2014, with a budget of Rs. 162 crores. Its first stretch covers a distance of 1,752 meters, while the second, a distance of 1,226 meters.

  1. The grand opening of the Prozone Mall:   
The Prozone Mall, Sathy Road

 The Prozone Mall was formally declared open on July 21st, 2017. The mall is set up upon 12 acres on Sathy Road and is jointly promoted by the UK-based Intu Properties and Prozone. Prozone has over 100 stores and 9 theaters, including Coimbatore’s first Inox Cineplex. Being the third of its kind to open its doors to Coimbatoreans, the ever growing list of malls in Coimbatore is testament to its increasing significance.

  1. Chennai City Football Club’s base shift :

The Chennai City Football Club shifted its base to our very own Nehru Stadium. The stadium was leased by the CCFC for life and this has lead to its refurbishment, four years ahead of its golden jubilee. CCFC played its first home match on December 23,2017 against  East Bengal. CBE’s football fans can finally catch the I-League matches in action at their very own city!

        4.Unveiling of the Adiyogi Statue:

Another conspicuous addition to the list of events in 2017 is the unveiling of the 112 ft tall Adiyogi Shiva statue by the honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on the 24th of February. The statue was funded by the Isha Foundation, founded by Guru Jaggi Vasudev. The Prime Minister addressed the audience after unveiling the statue.

  1. The maiden journey of Coimbatore-Pollachi Passenger train:
Coimbatore’s first passenger special train

Coimbatore’s first passenger special train commenced its maiden journey from Coimbatore to Pollachi on the new broad gauge line in July 2017, after a long wait of 8 years. This passenger train departs from Coimbatore at 01.35 pm to reach Pollachi at 2.45 pm and during return, it is scheduled to leave Pollachi at 03.05 pm and arrive at Coimbatore at 04.15 pm.

  1. JUMPSTART:

The Manchester of South India, with more than 25,000 industries acts as a hub for an entire ecosystem of industries, thereby creating a natural entrepreneurial environment. JUMPSTART was a one-day conference which provided the platform for the young to interact with the  entrepreneurs who are successful in their respective fields. The Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and TiE Coimbatore, jointly organized the conclave on 11th March 2017 at Hotel Le Meridien and popular names like Vanitha Mohan, MaFoi Pandiarajan,  Rangaraj Pandey made it to the speakers’ list.

  1. Felicitation to the Alumni of PSG Institutions:
At the Felicitation Ceremony

A felicitation ceremony was held on 22nd November 2017 at the Convention Hall of PSG Institute of Management, to honour the alumni of PSG Institutions for their distinguished achievements and accomplishments. The chief guest of the evening was Dr.K.Vijayakarthikeyan IAS, Commissioner, Coimbatore Corporation. An overwhelming collective of 10 awardees, amongst a total of 21 awardees, were alumni of PSG Tech.

  1. Super Singer 2k17:

Super Singer, conducted by the Radio Hub, is PSG Tech’s own version of the famed singing contest, which provides a platform for and recognises aspiring and amateur singers. Students from different departments take part in it to exhibit their unique and mellifluous voices. The grand finale of Super Singer 2k17 was held on 11th March 2017 at the Q-Angle and Ms. Panimalar bagged the title. Mr. Syed Subahan, the runner-up of Vijay TV’s Super Singer-2014 and an alumnus of PSG Tech graced as the chief guest. Needless to say, the event was well received by the Techians.

 

  1. Tech Day 2017:

The Tech Day, organized by the Students’ Union is one of the most important days in PSG Tech’s  calendar. The ceremony involves felicitating students for their achievements and bestowing the deserving ones with scholarships. Tech Day 2017 took place in the month of March and the most prestigious award of the day, the KOORATHALVAR award was handed over to Ms.Kavitha from the Textile Department.

In addition to these events, Coimbatore was declared as one of the safest cities in the country for women, on a Times Of India index. The Coimbatore Day was celebrated on November 24, 2017 and the city came into possession of its own anthem, the ‘Kovai Gethu Anthem’, which was released on the same day. The three-minute video was composed by Hip Hop Tamizha and the video was directed by Aswin Sakthivel. Another notable event was the Coimbatore Book Festival that takes place annually. The third edition of the CBF was a 10-day festival, from the 21st to the 30th of July, 2017.

Coimbatore has undergone numerous changes across a varied number of sectors. While some of these events are quite colossal and magnanimous, some are perpetual, yet pave way for a number of tangible and intangible changes in the society. With these memorable events ensuring that ‘2017’ wasn’t just a passing cloud in the minds of Coimbatoreans and Techians alike, let us head into the new year with renewed vigor and our heads held high.
